I often use two numbers to describe the big challenge Texas faces in the future: 20 and 36. Only 20 percent of Texas eighth graders in 2006 graduated from college by 2017. And 36 percent of Texas job openings require an associate, bachelor or graduate degree.

In other words, not nearly enough Texas students are graduating with the education needed for the jobs that are available.
